The restoration and reinforcement of the murals in the Holy Mother of God Church in Gndevaz, Vayots Dzor Province, have been completed, with funding provided by Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports (MoESCS).
The Holy Mother of God Church, dating back to the 17th century, began its restoration process in 2024, with the full renovation of the church expected to conclude in 2025. The murals inside the church were repainted in 1906, and their restoration plan was developed during 2021-2022 by the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia. The project was led by mural restoration expert Arjanik Hovhannisyan.
The restoration and reinforcement work were carried out by “Restart 1” LLC, which was selected through an open tender announced by the MoESCS in 2024. After the completion of the work, the murals were covered with a protective layer to ensure their preservation until the restoration of the church is fully completed.
Once the restoration is finalized, the Holy Mother of God Church will reopen to pilgrims and visitors, showcasing its restored cultural and historical value along with preserved murals.
