MIDDLESBROUGH (Azat TV) – A significant stretch of the A19 in County Durham was closed in both directions on Monday morning, February 9, 2026, following a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle. The incident, which occurred shortly after 07:00 GMT, has led to severe traffic delays for commuters between Portrack and Billingham, with authorities warning that the road could remain shut for several hours as collision investigations proceed.

Cleveland Police confirmed the closure on its Facebook page, advising motorists to seek alternative routes. The North East Ambulance Service responded to the scene on the A19 Fleet Bridge Road, where emergency services were called around 07:00 GMT. The crash has particularly impacted the northbound carriageway, affecting traffic from the A1046 Haverton Hill Road (Portrack Interchange) to the A139 (Norton Interchange).

A19 Collision Causes Severe Disruptions

The immediate aftermath of the collision saw extensive congestion, with AA Traffic reporting delays extending back to the A174. Traffic monitoring site Inrix described the situation as “long delays due to accident” on the A19 Northbound, with congestion reaching the A174. Specifically, southbound traffic experienced severe delays of approximately 24 minutes between the A689 Coal Lane (Wolviston) and the A1046 Haverton Hill Road (Portrack Interchange), with average speeds dropping to 10 mph.

National Highways, responsible for England’s major road network, confirmed their traffic officers were on site assisting with traffic management. They also indicated that plans were being formulated to release vehicles caught within the extensive closure, a common challenge during prolonged road incidents.

Ongoing Investigations and Diversion Routes

Cleveland Police, in coordination with National Highways, has initiated collision investigations at the scene. These inquiries are critical to understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident involving the pedestrian and the vehicle. Officials have not yet released details regarding the condition of those involved, but the extended closure suggests the severity of the incident and the thoroughness of the ongoing investigation.

Due to the prolonged closure, specific diversion routes have been established to guide motorists around the affected area. For road users on the southbound carriageway, the advised route involves exiting at the A19, taking the first exit onto the A1027, then navigating through a series of roundabouts via the A1027 Bypass Road and New Road, before rejoining the A19 southbound via the A1046. Similar diversions are in place for northbound traffic, utilizing the A177 and A1027 to bypass the closure.

The sustained closure of a critical arterial route like the A19, especially during peak commuter hours, underscores the significant logistical challenges posed by serious road traffic incidents and the extensive coordination required among emergency services and highway authorities to manage their aftermath.
