The World Weightlifting Championship in Manama, Bahrain, started successfully for the Armenian team. On December 8, 19-year-old Aleksandra Grigoryan competed in the women’s 55 kg weight category and secured a bronze medal with a total lift of 205 kg.
Grigoryan lifted 85 kg in the snatch, finishing 12th, but excelled in the clean and jerk, lifting 120 kg, which earned her a small silver medal. The world champion title went to North Korea’s Hyon Gyong Kang, who lifted a total of 226 kg (100+126), while silver was claimed by Guan-Lin Chen of Chinese Taipei with 211 kg (93+118).
In the men’s competition, Armenia’s first participant, Garnik Cholakyan, performed brilliantly in the 61 kg “B” group. He lifted a total of 280 kg (130+150), claiming the top spot in his group. After the conclusion of the “A” group competition, Cholakyan secured 7th place overall, surpassing three competitors from the stronger division.
The championship continues, with the Armenian team, led by head coach Pashik Alaverdyan, awaiting the performances of its other athletes. Upcoming competitors include Gor Sahakyan (73 kg), Andranik Karapetyan (89 kg), Hakob Mkrtchyan and Davit Hovhannisyan (both 96 kg), Ara Aghanyan (102 kg), Garik Karapetyan and Petros Petrosyan (109 kg), and Varazdat Lalayan (+109 kg). In the women’s competition, Tatev Hakobyan (87 kg) will also take the stage.
The Armenian team continues to solidify its presence on the international weightlifting stage, achieving impressive results and securing significant accomplishments.
