Hazardous Road Conditions Persist Across Armenia Due to Winter Weather

Armenia’s Rescue Service, under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, has issued an advisory regarding hazardous road conditions across the republic due to a combination of snow, ice, and reduced visibility. These challenging conditions are impacting various routes, creating difficulties for travelers.

Several key roadways are currently experiencing significant disruptions. The road leading from the Amberd high-mountain meteorological station to Lake Kari remains closed. Furthermore, the Vardenyats mountain pass and the Artashavan-Tsilkar section are difficult to traverse for all types of vehicles. These closures and restrictions highlight the severity of the weather in certain regions.

The presence of precipitation further complicates travel. Snowfall has been reported in the Aparan region, the village of Tsilkar, the Vardenyats pass, and the cities of Jermuk, Dilijan, Gavar, and Sisian. These areas, along with the “Meghru Sar” and “Zanger”-Tsghuk sections, as well as the Tigranashen turns, are also affected by black ice, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. The combination of snow and ice creates particularly hazardous driving conditions.

Reduced visibility due to fog is also contributing to travel difficulties. Fog has been reported along the Yerevan-Sevan highway, as well as in the villages of Mayakovski, Balahovit, Jrvezh, and Dzoraghbyur, and in the Talin region. Additionally, blizzard conditions, characterized by blowing snow and reduced visibility, are present in the Aragats region and along the Aparan-Nigavan road. These conditions further compound the challenges faced by drivers.

Given these hazardous conditions, the Rescue Service strongly advises drivers to use winter tires exclusively to ensure safe passage and prevent potential accidents. This recommendation underscores the importance of preparedness during periods of inclement weather.

Despite the difficult conditions within Armenia, the Stepantsminda-Larsi highway is currently open for all types of vehicles, according to information received from the Emergency Situations Department of the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Crisis Management Center of North Ossetia, Russia.
