Armenian-Georgian Astronomy Colloquium Returns to Byurakan in May 2025

From May 5 to 9, 2025, the Byurakan Observatory will host the XVII Armenian-Georgian (Byurakan-Abastumani) Astronomy Colloquium, a scientific event that has become a tradition over the years. Organized under the long-standing cooperation between the Byurakan Observatory (BA) and the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory (AbAO), the colloquium serves as a platform for advancing scientific connections and sharing research on current astrophysical topics.

A History of Scientific Friendship Between Armenia and Georgia

The scientific collaboration and friendship between Armenian and Georgian astronomers trace back to the 1930s, initiated by two prominent figures: Viktor Ambartsumian (1908–1996), the founder of Byurakan Observatory, and Evgeni Kharadze (1907–2001), the founder of Abastumani Observatory. Their vision led to the launch of joint colloquia in 1974, creating a tradition of alternating meetings held in Byurakan and Abastumani.

Goals and Language of the Colloquium

The upcoming XVII colloquium will continue this legacy, focusing on the exchange of scientific knowledge, collaborative research, and the strengthening of professional ties between Armenian and Georgian astronomers. The working languages of the colloquium will be English and Russian, enabling effective communication across the diverse scientific community.
