Luis Moreno Ocampo, former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, has condemned the criminal trials launched on January 17, 2025, in Baku against the political and military leadership of Artsakh. He described these trials as a tool to obscure crimes committed against the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, including detainees.

In a post on his X microblog, Ocampo stated: “Azerbaijan’s bogus charges are a cover-up of the crimes committed against the Nagorno-Karabakh people, including the prisoners.” According to him, these trials are politically motivated and serve to distract attention from ongoing violations of the rights of the people of Artsakh.

Ocampo compared Azerbaijan’s actions to the show trials of the Stalin era, emphasizing their instrumental use in suppressing dissent. “Stalin is dead, but Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is learning from him, using trials to target his enemies,” he remarked.

Ocampo underscored the importance of addressing these trials’ lack of fairness and impartiality. He further called for the immediate release of Armenian detainees held by Azerbaijani authorities, using the hashtag #FreeArmenianHostages.

This situation has prompted international observers and human rights organizations to focus on Azerbaijan’s actions, which may constitute further violations of international law. The trials highlight the need for increased global attention to the plight of Artsakh’s people and the detainees’ rights.

Ocampo’s statement serves as a critical voice, urging the international community to hold Azerbaijan accountable and protect fundamental human rights in the region.
