MUNICH (Azat TV) – BMW has officially debuted the all-new i3, a midsize electric sedan that marks a fundamental shift for the German automaker by repurposing a legacy nameplate for its next generation of battery-electric vehicles. Unveiled on March 18, 2026, the vehicle is the second model to be built on the modular Neue Klasse architecture, following the iX3 SUV. A Technological Leap for the Neue Klasse Platform

The new i3 represents what company officials describe as a technological quantum leap, moving away from the quirky, compact hatchback design of its predecessor. The sedan utilizes an 800-volt electrical architecture, which enables DC fast charging at speeds of up to 400 kW. According to preliminary data, this system allows the vehicle to regain approximately 250 miles of range in just 10 minutes of charging. Furthermore, the i3 marks BMW’s full adoption of the North American Charging Standard (NACS), ensuring compatibility with the Tesla Supercharger network.

Performance and the Heart of Joy Computing

At the center of the i3’s driving dynamics is a new high-performance computing system dubbed Heart of Joy. This central brain coordinates the vehicle’s powertrain and chassis systems with responsiveness reportedly ten times faster than previous generations. The 50 xDrive configuration features twin electric motors providing 469 horsepower and 645 Newton-meters of torque. The vehicle achieves an estimated range of up to 560 miles under the WLTP cycle, or approximately 440 miles by preliminary EPA standards, thanks to sixth-generation eDrive technology and new cell-to-pack battery architecture.

Design and Interior Evolution

The exterior design reflects a modern interpretation of the classic 3 Series silhouette, featuring a 2.5-box design with a minimalist front end where the traditional kidney grille is integrated into a unified light signature. Inside, the cabin is dominated by a 17.9-inch central touchscreen and a full-width Panoramic Vision display that provides navigation and speed data across the base of the windshield. The interior maintains a driver-oriented focus, though it relies heavily on digital controls, including for climate settings, reflecting a broader industry trend toward screen-heavy interfaces.
