Canada has announced sanctions on high-ranking Georgian officials and entities, following the example set by the Baltic nations. Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly made this statement during a joint press conference with the foreign ministers of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

Joly emphasized Canada’s solidarity with the Georgian people and expressed serious concerns over Russia’s actions in Georgia. “We are very concerned about what Russia is trying to do in Georgia. This is why we will follow the Baltic nations’ example and impose sanctions on key Georgian figures as well as businesses and entities involved in human rights violations or corruption,” Joly said.

Earlier, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia imposed sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, the honorary chairman of Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party, and several senior officials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Canada’s decision underscores international support for the Georgian people and strengthens collaboration with the Baltic nations.

Joly’s announcement also serves as a response to Russia’s claims that the events in Georgia represent “another Maidan.” These sanctions aim to address human rights violations and curb corruption in Georgia.

Other countries are reportedly considering similar measures against Georgian officials and organizations. Whether this international pressure will influence Georgia’s internal political landscape remains to be seen.
