Carlos Augusto Shines as Inter Milan Beats Como 2-0 to Stay in Title Hunt

Carlos Augusto

Inter Milan kept their Serie A title hopes alive with a commanding 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Como at the San Siro on Monday night. Goals from Carlos Augusto and Marcus Thuram in the second half ensured that the reigning champions maintained pressure on the top two teams in the league standings.

Dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Inter controlled the tempo throughout the first half but struggled to convert their opportunities. However, their persistence paid off shortly after the break when Carlos Augusto rose high at the far post to meet a perfectly delivered corner from Hakan Calhanoglu, giving Inter the lead with a towering header in the 48th minute.

Como, anchored by veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina, tried to hold off Inter’s relentless attacks but couldn’t withstand the pressure. The home side finally put the match to bed deep into stoppage time when Marcus Thuram struck a clinical finish past Reina to double the lead. Thuram’s goal brought his tally to 12 in the league, tying him with Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui as the top scorer in Serie A.

The victory lifts Inter Milan to 37 points after 16 games, keeping them in third place, just three points behind league leaders Atalanta and one point shy of Napoli in second. Both Atalanta and Napoli have played one more game than Inter, leaving the title race wide open as the season approaches its halfway mark.

Inter’s strong performance against Como reinforces their position as serious contenders for the Scudetto and sets the stage for a competitive battle at the top of the table in the coming weeks.
