Chinese automaker Chery Automobile unveils the Journeo concept, a forward-thinking MPV that blends off-road capability with family travel comfort.
In recent years, Chinese automaker Chery Automobile has established a significant presence in the European market with its affordable SUVs, primarily electric models. Beyond its global expansion, the company continues to innovate with concept vehicles, including the futuristic multi-purpose vehicle known as the New Journeo or Fulwin Jinyun SMPV. Designed at the Chery Advanced Design Center Europe in Germany, this concept embodies Chery’s “vision for a sustainable and connected future,” exploring vehicles that offer robust off-road performance alongside family-friendly comfort and luxury. Essentially, it’s a compact van that transforms into a camper when parked, ideal for adventures both in and out of the city.
Expandable Structure and Futuristic Design: Journeo’s Exterior Aesthetics
The New Journeo showcases an unconventional profile with a swept-back windshield, a rectangular cabin clad in carbon-like material, and a flat rear that expands into a greenhouse-like extension. It projects a youthful, fashionable, and sporty image, reflecting Chery’s strategy to attract younger consumers. The vehicle measures 204.7 inches (520 cm) in length but expands when parked, morphing into a next-generation camper equipped with innovative features such as a slide-out glass pod at the rear and a modular front trunk that integrates seating, a mobile kitchen, and a grill. It also features a sleek roof rack with integrated solar panels and a retractable three-leaf awning.
On and Off-Road Performance: Journeo’s Powertrain and Capabilities
While detailed powertrain specifications remain undisclosed, Chery has indicated that the MPV will be powered by a “Kunpeng Super Performance Electric Hybrid C-DM system.” This system pairs a 2.0-liter turbo engine with an electric drive and a three-speed transmission, reportedly achieving a combined range of 1,550 miles (2,500 km) on a full tank and battery. The concept also incorporates a driver assistance system that scans the surroundings for parking assistance and high-speed navigation support. Furthermore, it is engineered for both paved and unpaved roads, featuring height-adjustable air suspension that Chery claims will proactively adjust shock settings based on upcoming road conditions. The vehicle is equipped with robust airless tires and retractable skid plates.
Modular Interior and Luxurious Comfort: Journeo’s Cabin Experience
The interior is where the Journeo truly distinguishes itself. Sliding doors reveal a modular, lounge-inspired cabin designed for both comfort and adaptability. Although only slightly longer than a long-wheelbase Volkswagen Multivan, Chery’s design team opted for a two-row seating configuration with a central island. The front seats swivel to face rear passengers, creating a lounge-like atmosphere, while the rear bench, resembling a loveseat, converts into a daybed. Backrests fold to expand seating area, and door inserts can be removed and used as cushions. When the daybed is extended, the rear passenger area transforms into a luxurious lounge with panoramic views through the glass tailgate, enhanced by a panoramic glass roof. The rear section can be fully opened to embrace the surrounding environment.
Multifunctional Frunk and Eco-Conscious Materials: Journeo’s Standout Features
The camping focus extends to a modular front trunk designed for multifunctionality, serving as a compartment for a mobile kitchen, complete with a grill, or additional storage. The front grille panel is also expandable and multifunctional, extending forward and folding down to create a curved loveseat at the front of the vehicle. Aligned with an eco-conscious design philosophy, the Journeo’s interior emphasizes sustainable materials, such as Ultrasuede, a luxurious and functional non-woven material with a suede texture. The ultra-slim roof rack, integrated with solar panels and designed as a storage module for the awning, further underscores the concept’s eco-friendly approach.
The New Journeo concept van was initially presented at the 2024 Guangzhou Auto Show in November 2024 as the “Fulwin Jinyun SMPV.” Chery Automobile showcased it again in Germany recently, indicating that some Journeo features will be integrated into their Omoda&Jaeco-branded vehicles. If advanced to production, this conceptual MPV, exploring the potential of a versatile adventure van, could rival models like the Volkswagen ID. Buzz and the newly launched Kia PV5.
