UK Construction Activity Plummets

The UK construction industry is facing a severe contraction, with recent reports from the RICS construction monitor and S&P Global UK construction PMI indicating that activity has reached its lowest level in months. Private housing, a critical component of the domestic market, has been hit particularly hard, with activity levels dropping to a net -19%.

Industry experts point to a multifaceted crisis. While geopolitical instability and high costs are common factors, a significant decline in consumer trust is playing an outsized role. Research from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) reveals that one in five households has been discouraged from hiring contractors due to a lack of confidence. This erosion of trust is estimated to cost the UK economy approximately £11.2 billion annually, as homeowners increasingly delay or cancel necessary repairs, renovations, and structural upgrades.

German Industry Stagnation

In Germany, the construction landscape remains equally challenging. Industry reports indicate that while member companies recorded collective revenues of €432 billion in 2025, this figure masks a troubling reality: the 0.8% revenue increase was driven primarily by price hikes rather than actual construction volume. Rising costs for essential materials—including bitumen, cement, concrete, and plastics—have effectively offset potential growth, leaving the sector in a state of stagnation.

The combination of these domestic and international pressures has created a high-risk environment for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). As projects stall and insolvencies rise, policymakers are under pressure to address both the supply-side cost issues and the foundational lack of consumer confidence that continues to suppress demand.
