The statement by CSTO Secretary-General Imangali Tasmagambetov that “all obligations towards Armenia are being upheld” is a disgraceful declaration, characterized by falsehood and denial. This statement blatantly contradicts the reality, as the CSTO has repeatedly failed to fulfill its core responsibilities toward Armenia, especially during critical moments when support from its allies was crucial.
This analysis highlights the key points that expose the CSTO’s inefficiency and inability to protect the security rights of its member state, Armenia.
During Azerbaijan’s attacks on Armenia, the CSTO took no concrete action. In September 2022, when Azerbaijan invaded Armenia’s sovereign territory, the CSTO limited its response to expressing “deep concern.” According to its founding documents, the CSTO was obligated to provide military assistance, yet nothing materialized.
The CSTO also remained silent during the blockade of the Lachin Corridor, a lifeline for the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh. This was not just a violation of Armenia’s security but also a blatant disregard for regional stability, to which the CSTO turned a blind eye.
Tasmagambetov’s assertion that “Armenia’s non-participation does not affect the CSTO’s effectiveness” raises serious questions. If the organization failed to meet its obligations while Armenia was fully participating, how can it claim to operate effectively without Armenia’s involvement? This underscores the CSTO’s tendency to ignore its fundamental flaws.
Furthermore, Tasmagambetov’s claim that Armenia’s decision to freeze its participation was unilateral and hopes for its reversal fail to address the underlying reasons for Armenia’s move. This highlights the CSTO’s unwillingness to acknowledge its failures and reevaluate its actions.
The CSTO’s inaction and refusal to honor its commitments have undermined the foundation of its alliance. If the security guarantees of a member state are not upheld, what justifies the organization’s existence?
The Secretary-General’s statement not only contradicts reality but also underscores systemic issues within the CSTO. Armenia’s decision to suspend its participation in the organization was justified, and until the CSTO begins to fulfill its obligations, such statements will remain hollow promises. Ensuring regional stability requires not declarations but tangible actions, something the CSTO has yet to demonstrate.
For Armenia, the next logical step is to leave the CSTO and pursue military cooperation with nations and organizations ready to support Armenia’s security. This strategic move is vital for fostering stronger alliances and ensuring sustainable security in the region.
