The European Union has unveiled the first draft of the general-purpose AI code of practice under its groundbreaking AI Act, aiming to regulate and ensure the safe and trustworthy deployment of artificial intelligence models.
The draft applies to providers of general-purpose AI models and invites public feedback until November. The finalized code is expected to be completed by April 2025, as per the European Commission.
In a statement, the European Commission noted: “The final document will play a crucial role in guiding the future development and deployment of trustworthy and safe general-purpose AI models.”
The code includes requirements related to transparency and copyright obligations for providers. For advanced models posing systemic risks, it will outline detailed risk assessment, technical measures, and governance practices.
Transparency requirements will come into effect on August 1, 2025. However, models with systemic risks will be given up to 36 months to comply with the risk assessment requirements, with a deadline of August 1, 2027.
