NEW YORK (Azat TV) – Two individuals were arrested and four others detained following the deployment of an “improvised explosive device” near Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The incident occurred on Sunday during a volatile confrontation between an anti-Islam demonstration and counter-protesters, authorities reported.
Explosive Device Deployed Amidst Protest Chaos
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) confirmed that an object described as an improvised explosive device was thrown during the protest. Preliminary analysis by NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch indicated that the item was “not a hoax device or a smoke bomb.” The device, found to contain nuts, bolts, and a fuse, was reportedly ignited and thrown toward a barrier near police officers by one of the arrested individuals, identified as Emir Balat. Balat then reportedly dropped a second similar device on the street as officers moved in. The FBI has joined the investigation into the incident.
Clash Between Demonstrators
The violence erupted as an anti-Islam demonstration, organized by right-wing influencer Jake Lang, clashed with a larger group of counter-demonstrators during the holy month of Ramadan. Witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke from the device as it traveled through the air before it extinguished itself near police. The escalation reportedly began when a participant from the anti-Islam group allegedly used pepper spray against counter-protesters, leading to the subsequent deployment of the devices.
Mayor and Governor Respond
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and his wife, Rama Duwaji, were reported to be safe. A spokesperson for the Mayor condemned the Lang-organized gathering as “despicable and Islamophobic,” noting that such events are a “stark reminder of the threats they both face regularly.” New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated that while the state upholds the right to peaceful protest, there is “zero tolerance for hate or violence.” Police have indicated no current links to ongoing international conflicts.
Context of Social Media Controversy
The incident also comes amid broader scrutiny of the Mayor’s office, with reports highlighting past controversies. Notably, a Sky News Australia host recently criticized Mayor Mamdani’s response to social media activity by his wife, Rama Duwaji, describing it as “pathetic” and accusing the Mayor of “gaslighting” the city. The criticism centered on Duwaji’s alleged liking of Instagram posts related to the October 7 events, which some found “disgraceful.” Mayor Mamdani, the city’s first Muslim mayor, leads a city estimated to be home to up to 1 million Muslims.
The deployment of an “improvised explosive device” during a protest outside the Mayor’s residence underscores the heightened tensions surrounding political and social demonstrations in New York City, particularly during periods of religious observance.
