We Fully Support EU Integration of Armenia in Economic, Trade, and Security Sectors: Speaker of Finland’s Parliament

During his visit to Yerevan, Jussi Halla-aho, Speaker of the Parliament of Finland, emphasized the importance of the European Union’s integration process for Armenia and called for the continuation of reforms in the country. Halla-aho made these remarks in an interview with “Armenpress.”

In the interview, the Speaker of Finland’s Parliament noted that during his visit, he held discussions with Armenia’s Prime Minister, President, and members of parliament on several pressing issues, including the situation of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan and the paths to finding a lasting solution acceptable to all parties. He also paid significant attention to Armenia’s aspirations for European integration.

– We have clearly communicated to our hosts that we fully support the European Union’s integration of Armenia in economic, trade, and security sectors, – said Halla-aho. – However, there are certain challenges and obstacles on this path that need to be addressed, such as Armenia’s membership in the CSTO, the Eurasian Economic Union, and the presence of Russian military forces in Armenia.

The Speaker of Finland’s Parliament emphasized that the continuity of reforms in Armenia is crucial not only for the European Union but also for the Armenian people themselves.

– It is very important that you continue the reforms being implemented in your country. This is not for the European Union; this is for the Armenians themselves. These reforms will make Armenia more resilient and society stronger. And I am confident that this will be very good for the Armenian people, – he said.

During the interview, Halla-aho also addressed the issue of peaceful resolution of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

– I believe it is important for the European Union to continue its monitoring mission on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. This is crucial for reducing tensions and avoiding minor escalations at the border, – he said.

The Speaker of Finland’s Parliament noted that Armenia must continue to reduce its dependence on Russia in all areas to further integrate with European structures. He also hinted that Finland, which was also part of the Russian Empire, understands Armenia’s challenges well.

– We understand your challenges, your prospects, and your perspectives very well, – said Halla-aho.

The visit of the Speaker of Finland’s Parliament to Armenia and his statements demonstrate that the European Union continues to support Armenia on its path to European integration, while emphasizing the importance of reforms and regional stability.
