SYDNEY (Azat TV) – GWM has officially detailed the pricing for its new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the Tank 300 body-on-frame SUV, setting a competitive benchmark ahead of its arrival at Australian dealers from March 2026. The 2026 GWM Tank 300 Hi4-T range will commence at a drive-away price of $55,990 for the entry-level Lux trim, extending to $59,990 drive-away for the top-spec Ultra variant, positioning it as a significant contender in the robust off-road SUV segment.

GWM has described these initial figures as a “limited-time special launch offer,” indicating a potential $2,000 price increase after February 28 if the promotion is not extended. This strategic pricing places the Lux PHEV identically to the Ultra Hybrid, while the Ultra PHEV emerges as the new flagship within the entire Tank 300 lineup. Simultaneously, GWM New Zealand has confirmed pricing for its market, with the Lux grade starting at $63,990 and the Ultra grade at $68,990, with availability from late March 2026.

GWM Tank 300 Hi4-T Performance and Capabilities

Underpinning the Tank 300 Hi4-T PHEV is a robust powertrain combining a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 120kW electric motor, seamlessly integrated into a nine-speed automatic transmission. This configuration delivers a formidable total system output of 300kW of power and 750Nm of torque. Notably, this represents a significant increase of 45kW and 102Nm over the existing Tank 300 Hybrid model, and even surpasses the 5.6-litre V8 engine found in the Nissan Patrol, which produces 2kW and 190Nm less.

A key engineering highlight is the electric motor’s integration, which ensures the Tank 300 Hi4-T PHEV retains its full mechanical four-wheel drive system, complete with a low-range transfer case. This, coupled with both front and rear locking differentials and a suite of off-road terrain settings, underscores GWM’s commitment to genuine off-road capability. The PHEV versions also maintain the Tank 300 line-up’s impressive 3000kg braked towing capacity.

Electric Range and Charging Features for the Tank 300

Equipped with a substantial 37.1kWh battery pack, GWM claims the Tank 300 Hi4-T PHEV can achieve an electric-only range of up to 115km, based on NEDC testing. This extended EV range is complemented by practical charging solutions, including fast-charging capabilities at rates up to 50kW, allowing for a 30 to 80 per cent charge in approximately 24 minutes. Furthermore, the vehicle boasts vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, providing up to 6kW of power to external devices and appliances, enhancing its utility for outdoor adventures or as a mobile power source.

GWM Australia and New Zealand COO, John Kett, emphasized the brand’s commitment to advanced technology: “With the Tank 300 Hi4-T PHEV, we’re continuing to expand our cutting-edge plug-in hybrid technology providing genuine off-road strength, all at a highly competitive price point. As demonstrated across our other PHEV variants, we remain committed to delivering vehicles where customers can benefit from strong EV-only range, fast charging, V2L and true mechanical 4×4 capability.” Mr. Kett also noted GWM’s readiness to deliver more technology in anticipation of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standards (NVES) in Australia.

Market Position and Future of GWM Powertrains

The introduction of this new PHEV powertrain expands the Tank 300’s engine offerings to four options, including a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol, 2.4-litre turbo-diesel, and a 2.0-litre hybrid. While the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel has historically been the best-selling powertrain for the Tank 300, it remains to be seen how the PHEV’s arrival will shift market preferences. GWM has previously streamlined its powertrain offerings with other PHEV launches, such as discontinuing the hybrid powertrain when the PHEV option was introduced for the Cannon Alpha dual-cab ute.

GWM’s Tank 300 range has seen significant growth, with sales increasing by 26.9 per cent in 2025, reaching 5035 units. This performance positions it favorably against rivals like the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota Fortuner, though it trails segment leaders such as the Ford Everest and Toyota LandCruiser Prado. The full specifications for the Tank 300 Hi4-T PHEV are expected to be detailed closer to its local launch in March, with the Ultra grade available initially and the Lux grade following in early April.

The strategic pricing and robust specifications of the GWM Tank 300 Hi4-T PHEV indicate GWM’s assertive play to capture a larger share of the off-road SUV market by offering a compelling blend of power, efficiency, and capability at a price point that undercuts many established competitors, potentially reshaping consumer expectations for the segment.
