Magnus Carlsen Disqualified for Wearing Jeans at Chess Tournament

Magnus Carlsen

Chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen was disqualified from the ongoing Rapid and Blitz Chess World Championship in New York for appearing in the 9th round wearing jeans. According to FIDE regulations, his attire was deemed inappropriate, resulting in a $200 fine. Carlsen was given the opportunity to change into proper attire to continue competing but declined the offer.

Explaining the situation, Carlsen stated that he had attended a meeting prior to the round, which left him with little time to change his outfit. “I put on a shirt and jacket, and honestly, I didn’t even think about the jeans, let alone my shoes,” the 34-year-old chess champion shared.

Despite the disqualification, Carlsen announced that he would not be appealing FIDE’s decision. The incident highlights the strict adherence to dress codes in the chess world, even at the highest levels of competition.

This event has sparked widespread discussion, emphasizing that chess is not only a battleground of intellect but also a sport with stringent rules and expectations for professional representation.
