LONDON (Azat TV) – Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has voiced concerns that the club’s current squad, despite a solid foundation of young talent, lacks the necessary experience to challenge for major trophies such as the Premier League and the Champions League. Cucurella, speaking to The Athletic, suggested that an over-reliance on signing only young players could hinder the team’s ambitions for top-tier success.
Squad Balance for Major Trophies
Cucurella emphasized the need for a delicate equilibrium within the team. “We have a good core of players. The foundations are there. But to fight for major trophies such as the Premier League or UCL, you need MORE,” he stated. He elaborated that while young players are crucial for the future and will gain experience, the immediate pursuit of top honors requires individuals who have navigated high-pressure situations. “Signing young players ONLY might complicate achieving those goals,” Cucurella warned, adding, “Against PSG, we lacked players that had gone through situations like that. You need time, I know the young players are the ones that will have the experience in the future. But you need to find the BALANCE between both worlds.”
Impact of Managerial Changes
The Spanish defender also highlighted the significant impact of Enzo Maresca’s departure from the club, a decision he personally disagreed with. Cucurella believes that such a managerial change would have been better postponed until the end of the season. “The moment Enzo Maresca left, it had a big impact on us,” he revealed. “If you asked me, I would NOT have made this decision. To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season…” He recalled the strong bond formed during celebrations, such as winning the Club World Cup, which fostered a deep loyalty to a manager who instilled confidence and provided a platform for success. “We knew what Maresca wanted from us. Winning a title like the Club World Cup also helps… you create great relationships during the celebrations. When a manager gives you that confidence and offers you a platform to fight for titles, you’d die for him.”
The Need for Proven Winners
Cucurella’s comments underscore a recurring theme in football: the invaluable role of experience in achieving sustained success at the highest level. While Chelsea has invested heavily in promising young talent, the defender’s remarks suggest that a strategic infusion of players who have consistently performed under pressure and understand the demands of title races is essential for the club’s next phase of development. The team’s ability to secure major trophies, according to Cucurella, hinges on finding this crucial balance between youthful potential and seasoned expertise.
Cucurella’s candid assessment points to a strategic challenge for Chelsea, suggesting that raw talent alone is insufficient for immediate elite-level contention, necessitating a careful blend of experience and potential to bridge the gap to Premier League and Champions League success.
