JOHANNESBURG (Azat TV) – Mitsubishi has officially confirmed the pricing and market launch details for the all-new Destinator, a seven-seater SUV designed specifically for developing markets. The vehicle is set to arrive in South African showrooms by the end of March 2026, offering a strategic middle-ground option between the Outlander Sport and the full-size Outlander.
Expanding the SUV Portfolio with the Destinator
The Destinator, which originated from the DST Concept, is manufactured at Mitsubishi’s Cikarang plant in Indonesia. Measuring 4 680 mm in length and 1 840 mm in width, the vehicle is notably larger than its immediate competitors, such as the Hyundai Alcazar, exceeding that model by 120 mm in length and 40 mm in width. With a wheelbase of 2 815 mm and a ground clearance of 214 mm, the SUV is engineered to handle diverse road conditions, further supported by a five-mode drive selector that includes Wet, Tarmac, Normal, Gravel, and Mud settings.
Performance and Trim Differentiation
Power for the entire range is provided by a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which delivers 120 kW and 250 Nm of torque. This powertrain is paired exclusively with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that sends power to the front wheels. Mitsubishi has structured the local lineup into two distinct trim levels: the entry-level GLS and the flagship Exceed.
The GLS model arrives with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, fabric upholstery, an eight-inch infotainment display, and a six-speaker sound system. The Exceed variant elevates the offering with premium features including a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, an eight-speaker Yamaha audio system, panoramic sunroof, hands-free electric tailgate, and synthetic leather upholstery. The Exceed also gains a more comprehensive suite of driver assistance technology, such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitoring, and a surround-view camera system.
Market Positioning and Stakes
Pricing for the GLS model starts at R489 900, while the Exceed flagship is priced at R569 900. According to Lerato Nonyane, General Manager of Product and Marketing at Mitsubishi South Africa, the Destinator is intended to meet the needs of families and explorers looking for a blend of versatility and capability. To support the launch, Mitsubishi has announced a promotional incentive for the first 20 customers to purchase the vehicle, which includes a special price point and additional rewards.
The introduction of the Destinator signals a calculated effort by Mitsubishi to capitalize on the high demand for accessible seven-seat utility vehicles in emerging markets, effectively leveraging its Indonesian production capacity to balance competitive pricing with a feature-rich flagship offering.
