- Two passengers lost their lives in a train incident near Mumbra on June 9.
- Overcrowding and a sharp curve near the station are believed to be factors.

A tragic incident unfolded on the morning of June 9 near Mumbra station in Thane, Maharashtra, when two passengers lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after falling from an overcrowded local train. The accident occurred on the Down Fast line during peak rush hour, as the train was en route to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
Overcrowding and a sharp curve blamed for the incident
According to Dr. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, the mishap occurred between Mumbra and Diva stations. “As per information received from the Guard of the Kasara-bound local train, eight people had fallen down,” he stated. Those injured were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Initial reports from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) confirmed two fatalities, including Adesh Anant Bhoir, a resident of Shahapur Taluka.
Witness accounts suggest that overcrowding on the train played a significant role. Tushar Bhagat, a passenger who suffered head and leg injuries, described the moments leading up to the fall: “An express train was passing us. As we approached the curve near Mumbra, those standing at the door started getting squeezed. They held onto us to save themselves, but we all fell.”
Structural challenges amplify risks on Mumbai’s suburban network
Officials have pointed to the sharp curve near Mumbra as another contributing factor. Local and long-distance trains, including the Pushpak Express, often travel in opposite directions on this stretch. Speculation suggests that the proximity of these trains may have caused panic among passengers standing near the doors, leading to the tragedy. While Dr. Nila clarified that there was no physical collision, he acknowledged the challenges posed by narrow gaps between trains on curved tracks.
Mumbai’s suburban rail network, one of the busiest in the world, has long grappled with chronic overcrowding. Passenger associations have repeatedly raised concerns about safety, particularly during peak hours when trains often carry double their capacity. The reopening of schools and colleges in recent weeks has further strained the system.
Immediate safety measures announced by Railway Board
In response to the incident, the Railway Board has announced a series of safety upgrades aimed at preventing similar tragedies. “All rakes under manufacturing for Mumbai Suburban will have automatic door closer facilities,” said Dilip Kumar, Executive Director (Information & Publicity) of the Railway Board. Additionally, existing rakes in service will be redesigned to include door closure mechanisms.
These measures are part of a broader effort to modernize Mumbai’s aging rail infrastructure. However, experts caution that addressing the root causes of overcrowding will require a multi-pronged approach, including expanding train frequency and improving last-mile connectivity to reduce dependence on local trains.
The tragic events near Mumbra serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for systemic reforms in Mumbai’s suburban rail network. With millions relying on these trains daily, ensuring passenger safety must remain a top priority.
