New Diplomatic Appointments for 2025

On April 11, 2025, Armenia’s President signed decrees appointing new ambassadors to three countries: Japan, Moldova, and Cambodia. These appointments reflect evolving regional priorities and a shift in Armenia’s diplomatic structure for greater efficiency.

Who Are the Newly Appointed Ambassadors?

Monika Simonyan has been designated as Armenia’s new ambassador to Japan, stepping into a full-time resident role. Her appointment comes as Areg Hovhannisyan is recalled from his ambassadorial duties in Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.

Regional Consolidation: Cambodia and Moldova Now Covered by Non-Resident Ambassadors

Suren Baghdasaryan, who currently represents Armenia in Vietnam, will concurrently serve as ambassador to Cambodia. Likewise, Tigran Galstyan, Armenia’s ambassador to Romania, has been appointed as non-resident ambassador to Moldova.

Areg Hovhannisyan Recalled from Four Key Posts

In a significant reshuffle, Areg Hovhannisyan has been recalled from ambassadorial positions in Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. This move signals a broader recalibration of Armenia’s diplomatic representation abroad.

Strategic Significance of the New Postings

These appointments support Armenia’s broader foreign policy goals of deepening ties in Asia and Eastern Europe while ensuring more cost-effective and coordinated diplomatic representation.
