Born Olivia Osuna on April 17, 1951, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Hussey was the daughter of tango singer Andrés Osuna and English legal secretary Joy Hussey. Raised in her mother’s native England, she nurtured a passion for acting from an early age, eventually studying at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London. By 13, she began her professional career on stage, earning recognition that would launch her into international stardom.

Hussey’s breakthrough came when Franco Zeffirelli cast her as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet at just 16 years old. The film, praised for its authenticity and emotive performances, brought her global acclaim, earning her a Golden Globe for New Star of the Year and cementing her status as a cinematic icon. Her portrayal of Juliet remains a definitive interpretation of Shakespeare’s heroine, celebrated for its depth and maturity.

Following Romeo and Juliet, Hussey’s career flourished with diverse roles in films such as Black Christmas (1974), a cult classic of the horror genre, and Zeffirelli’s Jesus of Nazareth (1977), in which she portrayed Mary, the mother of Jesus. Her versatility extended to international productions, including Death on the Nile (1978) and the Japanese film Virus (1980).
