On November 15, Armenia’s National Assembly convened to discuss the election of the Chairman of the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC). The government has nominated Mesrop Mesropyan to fill the vacant position.
The parliamentary opposition expressed skepticism regarding the proposed candidate.
Previously, the role of PSRC chairman was held by Garegin Baghramyan, whose six-year tenure was marked by widespread public dissatisfaction with service providers.
Will this new appointment meet expectations that the commission could more effectively address sectoral challenges in the future?
It is worth noting that Mesrop Mesropyan was formerly a member of the ruling “Civil Contract” party and only recently left its ranks. This raises concerns, as the PSRC should remain politically neutral. Additionally, Mesropyan is a relative of Sasun Mikayelyan’s wife; Mikayelyan is the chairman of the Yerkrapah Volunteer Union.
