QUEBEC CITY (Azat TV) – Quebec Environment Minister Bernard Drainville officially launched his campaign Saturday to become the next leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) and, by extension, the province’s premier, setting the stage for a competitive contest to succeed outgoing Premier François Legault. Drainville’s announcement positions him as a frontrunner in the nascent leadership race, with the party set to choose its new head on April 12.
According to information obtained by The Canadian Press, Minister Drainville initiated his leadership bid via social media, strategically getting an early start ahead of his main rival. His entry into the race comes after a period of speculation and marks a significant moment for the governing party as it prepares for a transition in leadership.
Early Supporters and Key Opponents Emerge
Bernard Drainville has already garnered support from within the CAQ caucus, notably securing endorsements from Samuel Poulin, Minister for the Economy, and Kariane Bourassa, a Member of the National Assembly. These signatures must be geographically diverse, originating from at least 75 ridings across Quebec. Furthermore, candidates must secure endorsements from a minimum of 15 sitting Members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and 100 members of the party’s youth wing.
In addition to membership and MNA endorsements, financial commitments are also substantial. Candidates are mandated to make a non-refundable lump sum contribution of $30,000 to the party. Election expenses for each campaign are capped at $150,000, a measure likely intended to ensure a relatively level playing field and prevent excessive spending.
Both Drainville and Fréchette, as sitting ministers, will be required to temporarily step down from their ministerial positions to fully dedicate themselves to their campaigns. Bernard Drainville brings a wealth of experience to his leadership bid, having a varied political career spanning multiple parties. He initially began his political journey with the Parti Québécois, serving as Minister of Democratic Institutions and Citizen Participation under former Premier Pauline Marois. During his time with the Parti Québécois, he was known for his advocacy on issues related to Quebec identity and democratic reform.
After a period away from provincial politics, Drainville made a notable return in 2022, this time joining the Coalition Avenir Québec. He was successfully elected in the riding of Lévis under the CAQ banner.
