Russell Wilson, the veteran quarterback, has agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $21 million with the New York Giants, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The 36-year-old Wilson is coming off a season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he led the team to a 10-8 record but suffered a playoff loss in the Wild Card Round.
Wilson’s move to the Giants comes after the Steelers decided not to pursue another year with him, instead focusing on signing Aaron Rodgers. Wilson had discussions with the Giants, Cleveland Browns, and Steelers before choosing New York, where he won Super Bowl XLVIII in MetLife Stadium.
During his lone season with the Steelers, Wilson posted 16 touchdowns and 2,482 yards, completing 63.7% of his pass attempts. He took over for Justin Fields in Week 7 after starting the year on the sideline due to a calf injury in the preseason.
The Giants now have a loaded quarterback room with Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Tommy DeVito. While Winston signed a two-year, $8 million deal last week, he is expected to be Wilson’s backup in 2025.
Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers are now in the driver’s seat in the Aaron Rodgers sweepstakes. Rodgers, who struggled with the New York Jets in recent seasons, is looking for a fresh start. If signed, he would be the unquestioned starter in Pittsburgh, with Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson as backups.
Wilson’s departure from Pittsburgh marks the end of a brief but impactful chapter for the veteran quarterback. As he heads to New York, the Giants hope he can bring stability and leadership to a team that finished 3-14 last season.
