MOSCOW (Azat TV) – Russia’s Ministry of Defence announced on March 21 that its forces intercepted a record number of Ukrainian drones overnight, claiming 283 fixed-wing UAVs were shot down across 14 Russian regions and occupied Crimea. The scale and geographic spread of the alleged attack suggest a coordinated effort to strike deep into Russian territory.

Widespread Drone Activity Reported

According to reports from BBC Russian and the Telegram channel Astra, drones were reportedly downed over Bryansk, Smolensk, Kaluga, Belgorod, Voronezh, Rostov, Volgograd, Tula, Ryazan, Kursk, Saratov, Samara, Tatarstan, the Moscow region, and Crimea. This extensive list indicates Ukrainian forces aimed for targets far beyond their immediate border.

Oil Refineries as Likely Targets

Among the most significant potential targets highlighted was the Ufa refinery cluster in Bashkortostan. Radiy Khabirov, the head of the republic, confirmed that drones were intercepted in the vicinity of oil refineries in Ufa. Astra, analyzing available footage, indicated that Bashneft’s refineries were indeed the probable targets of the Ufa attack, suggesting a strategic effort to disrupt Russia’s energy infrastructure.

The sheer volume of drones claimed to have been intercepted by Russia represents a significant escalation in drone warfare tactics, with Ukrainian forces appearing to employ a broad, synchronized approach across multiple regions.
