Ahead of COP29, Azerbaijani official Elnur Soltanov allegedly used his position to discuss fossil fuel deals, according to secret recordings obtained by the BBC. Soltanov reportedly organized a meeting with a person posing as an investor interested in SOCAR.
Soltanov highlighted that Azerbaijan is open to developing new gas fields. A former senior UN official condemned such deals within the COP process, calling them “completely unacceptable.”
Neither the Azerbaijani COP29 team nor SOCAR have commented on the BBC’s revelations, sparking significant public response.
