SEVILLE (Azat TV) – Sevilla FC announced on Monday the sacking of their head coach Matias Almeyda, a decision that comes as the seven-time Europa League champions find themselves precariously positioned in 15th place in La Liga. The Andalusian club, currently three points above the relegation zone with nine games remaining, confirmed the dismissal in a brief statement.

Almeyda’s Short Stint Ends Amidst Poor Form

The 52-year-old Argentine, who had been appointed last July on a three-year contract, was relieved of his duties following a 2-0 home defeat to Valencia on Saturday night. This loss extended Sevilla’s poor run to just one win in their last eight league games. Almeyda’s tenure saw the team win 10, draw 7, and lose 15 of his 32 matches in charge. While his side scored 43 goals, they conceded 52, with their 49 goals conceded in La Liga representing the worst defensive record in the division. The club statement thanked Almeyda and his team for their efforts and professionalism, wishing them well for the future.

Club in Relegation Battle

Sevilla’s current league standing of 15th place, with 31 points from 29 matches, places them in a desperate fight to avoid relegation. The proximity to the drop zone has prompted the club’s board to seek a ‘new manager bounce’ in the final stretch of the season. Almeyda himself was serving a seven-match ban for confronting a match official, with assistant Javi Martinez having taken over coaching duties on the touchline during this period.

Search for a Successor Underway

With the international break providing a temporary reprieve, Sevilla is now actively searching for Almeyda’s successor. Reports suggest that former Levante, Alaves, and Mallorca manager Luis Garcia Plaza is considered a strong candidate, known for his ability to steer teams away from relegation trouble. Other familiar names, such as Martinez, Manolo Jimenez, or even Joaquin Caparros, are also being mentioned as potential replacements. A relegation would plunge the club into significant uncertainty, particularly amidst a reported takeover bid led by former player Sergio Ramos.

Almeyda’s Coaching Trajectory

Almeyda, who began his coaching career at River Plate in 2011, previously managed AEK Athens from 2022 to 2025 before his move to Seville. His time in Greece saw him lead the club to significant success, but his stint at Sevilla has been cut short by the team’s struggles in La Liga.

The decision to sack Matias Almeyda underscores the high-stakes environment in La Liga’s relegation battle, where clubs are willing to make drastic changes to secure their top-flight status, especially with significant financial and reputational implications tied to remaining in the division.
