The apology, issued on April 11, 2026, comes after weeks of unrest surrounding an event held in March that was widely perceived as the illegal coronation of a Nigerian national as an Igbo king in South Africa.
Disavowing the Title and Addressing the Backlash
In his statement, Eziko explicitly denied holding any royal title or authority, clarifying that he was never crowned and does not claim to be a king. He acknowledged the confusion caused by the March 14 gathering, which served as a flashpoint for anti-migrant sentiment in the Buffalo City Metro. “I would like to sincerely apologize to Kumkani Jonguxolo Sandile, the AmaRharhabe Xhosa Kingdom, the traditional leaders of South Africa, the people of KuGompo, and all South Africans,” Eziko stated. He emphasized his respect for the established traditional leadership and the laws of the country.

The incident drew sharp criticism from the national cabinet. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni described the event as a “kindergarten gimmick” that violated the legal frameworks governing traditional leadership in South Africa.
