EAST LONDON (Azat TV) – Solomon Ogbonna Eziko has formally apologized to traditional leaders and the residents of KuGompo City, seeking to de-escalate rising social tensions following a controversial event that triggered violent protests and national government condemnation. The apology, issued on April 11, 2026, comes after weeks of unrest surrounding an event held in March that was widely perceived as the illegal coronation of a Nigerian national as an Igbo king in South Africa.

Disavowing the Title and Addressing the Backlash

In his statement, Eziko explicitly denied holding any royal title or authority, clarifying that he was never crowned and does not claim to be a king. He acknowledged the confusion caused by the March 14 gathering, which served as a flashpoint for anti-migrant sentiment in the Buffalo City Metro. “I would like to sincerely apologize to Kumkani Jonguxolo Sandile, the AmaRharhabe Xhosa Kingdom, the traditional leaders of South Africa, the people of KuGompo, and all South Africans,” Eziko stated. He emphasized his respect for the established traditional leadership and the laws of the country.

Government Response to Social Instability

The incident drew sharp criticism from the national cabinet. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni described the event as a “kindergarten gimmick” that violated the legal frameworks governing traditional leadership in South Africa. The government has maintained that such structures are strictly regulated and that the event possessed no legal standing. While the Nigerian High Commission previously characterized the gathering as “purely symbolic” and offered its own apology to Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane, the damage to local community cohesion has been significant.

The Role of Social Media in Amplifying Local Disputes

The controversy has highlighted the vulnerability of social cohesion in the Eastern Cape, where online narratives quickly translated into physical destruction. Protests against the alleged coronation resulted in the torching of at least 10 vehicles and damage to a building in North End. Beyond the immediate conflict, the event has exacerbated existing frictions between various migrant communities and local residents regarding business compliance and alleged criminal activity. As public order police remain deployed in the affected areas, officials are now grappling with the broader implications of how localized grievances are being amplified into broader xenophobic flashpoints.

The rapid escalation from a cultural gathering to widespread civil unrest demonstrates the fragility of community relations when misinformation is weaponized, necessitating a more rigorous enforcement of local administrative laws alongside active community mediation to prevent future cycles of violence.
