MEXICO CITY (Azat TV) – Acclaimed indie electronic trio The xx have confirmed their long-awaited return to the stage with their first live performance in nearly eight years, scheduled for April 4, 2026, at the Pepsi Center WTC in Mexico City. This standalone concert will precede a series of festival appearances later in the year, signaling a significant new chapter for the band after a period focused on individual solo projects.
The announcement, made on February 24, 2026, via an Instagram post, revealed the specific date and venue after the band had teased their “first show back in a while” last week. Jamie Smith (Jamie xx), Romy Madley Croft (Romy), and Oliver Sim expressed their deep connection to Mexico, stating, “This is the start of a next chapter together, and there’s no better place to return than in front of our Mexican fans. We’ve always felt a deep connection to Mexico – the warmth, the openness, the energy from the crowd.” They concluded their message by thanking fans for their patience and expressing eagerness to reunite.
The xx’s Return and Upcoming Performances
The Mexico City event marks their first performance since 2018, ending an almost eight-year hiatus from live shows as a trio. Following this highly anticipated return, The xx are slated for an extensive run of festival dates across North America, South America, and Europe throughout 2026. Their confirmed schedule includes major festivals such as Coachella (April 10 and 17 in Indio, California), Primavera Sound (June 6 in Barcelona, Spain, and June 11 in Porto, Portugal), and others including Kilby Block Party in Salt Lake City, C6 Fest in São Paulo, Unique Moments in Zürich, We Love Green Festival in Paris, Open’er Festival in Gdynia, Rock Werchter in Werchter, Down the Rabbit Hole in Beuningen, Way Out West in Gothenburg, and Syd for Solen in Copenhagen, as reported by BrooklynVegan.
Solo Ventures and Hints of New Material
Since their last album, 2017’s critically acclaimed ‘I See You,’ each member of The xx has explored successful solo careers. Romy released her debut album ‘Mid Air’ in 2023, followed by a string of singles. Oliver Sim’s first solo LP, ‘Hideous Bastard,’ arrived in 2022, with two more singles released last year. Jamie xx launched his second solo album, ‘In Waves,’ in 2024, notably featuring his bandmates Romy and Oliver on the track ‘Waited All Night.’
Hints of a reunion began to surface in 2024 when Jamie xx mentioned the trio were “having a good time” working on new material. In March 2025, the band was seen in the studio together, and by September, they shared rehearsal footage following the initial Coachella line-up announcement. A significant moment for fans was Jamie xx’s reunion with Romy and Oliver onstage at last year’s LIDO Festival, where he was headlining.
‘Sounds Like Us’ – The Future of The xx’s Music
Speaking to NME at the BRIT Awards 2024, Romy offered insight into their creative process, stating, “We’re just keeping it really open and we’re up for trying new things, but it sounds like us. That’s all I can say right now.” This suggests a blend of familiar sonic elements with fresh experimentation, maintaining the distinctive sound that earned them widespread acclaim.
Their 2017 album ‘I See You’ achieved significant commercial success, becoming their second Number One album in the UK and reaching Number Two in the US. NME awarded it a four-star review, highlighting Romy’s ‘pensive, vulnerable ballad ‘Performance’’ and describing the album as ‘a moment of realisation.’ The band also celebrated the deluxe version of their debut album, ‘xx,’ in November and are involved in Rough Trade’s 50th anniversary celebrations, with one of their releases included in the label’s list of 50 essential albums.
The return of The xx, especially with a dedicated comeback show preceding their festival commitments, underscores a deliberate and significant re-entry into the music scene, suggesting a renewed collective focus after a productive period of individual artistic growth.
