KYIV (Azat TV) – Ukraine’s air defense systems achieved a record interception rate of 89.9% against Russian aerial attacks in March, a significant improvement amid an unprecedented surge in drone and missile deployments by Moscow. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense reported that this figure marks a substantial increase from previous months, signaling enhanced effectiveness in neutralizing incoming threats.
Rising Interception Rates
The Ministry of Defense revealed that Ukraine’s shootdown rate for Russian air attacks has seen a consistent climb. In March, the interception success rate reached 89.9%, an improvement from 85.6% in February, 82.5% in January, and 80.2% in December. This represents a 9.7 percentage point increase over the past three months. The stated goal for Kyiv is to maintain a consistent interception rate of at least 95% of all incoming aerial weapons.
Record Russian Air Assaults
The enhanced interception capabilities come as Russia launched a record number of air attack weapons against Ukraine in March 2026. According to the Ministry of Defense, a total of 6,462 one-way attack drones were deployed by Russia last month. In total, 5,935 enemy air attack weapons failed to reach their targets in March, with the Ministry crediting the success to the “introduction of new air defense systems and further development of proven ones.” Officials stated that many lives were saved as a result of these successful interceptions.
The ministry’s figures suggest that the number of drones alone deployed in March surpassed the total number of drones used in preceding periods, underscoring the escalating intensity of Russia’s aerial campaign and Ukraine’s improving defensive response. The consistent increase in interception rates, despite the record number of incoming munitions, indicates a strengthening of Ukraine’s air defense posture.
