KYIV (Azat TV) – Ukraine has signed a significant 10-year agreement with Bulgaria for the joint production of drones and other armaments, a move President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Monday. The deal, finalized during a visit to Kyiv by Bulgaria’s interim Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev, aims to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities and adapt to rapidly evolving military technologies.
Joint Arms Production and Technological Advancement
President Zelenskyy expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, highlighting its long-term nature as crucial for sustained security cooperation. “The agreement provides for joint production on the territory of our countries of various types of armaments, including drones,” Zelenskyy stated. He emphasized that the decade-long duration of the pact will allow both nations to adapt to the swift advancements in technology, particularly in the realm of drones, which have become a pivotal tool in Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion. Bulgaria, a member of NATO and the European Union, possesses a defense industry with roots in Soviet-era standards, a legacy that makes much of its weaponry compatible with that currently used by the Ukrainian military.
Bulgaria’s Strategic Role in European Defense
The defense industry accounts for approximately 4% of Bulgaria’s GDP, a sector that has seen substantial growth since the full-scale war in Ukraine began in 2022, according to government data. Interim Prime Minister Glavchev described the new accord as the “result of long preparation” and not merely a formality. “This is not a simple formality, but a joint commitment to ensure our Euro-Atlantic security,” Glavchev remarked during a press conference with President Zelenskyy. Bulgaria has already been a significant supplier of arms to Kyiv, and this agreement signals a deepening strategic partnership.
Beyond Defense: Energy Corridor Collaboration
In addition to the defense cooperation, the leaders of Ukraine and Bulgaria also confirmed their joint efforts to develop the “Vertical Gas Corridor.” This initiative aims to create a new gas transit route connecting Greece with several countries in Southeast Europe, potentially enhancing regional energy security and diversification. The agreement on arms production follows a series of similar defense deals Ukraine has secured with partners in the Persian Gulf.
The strategic depth of this agreement extends beyond immediate military needs, fostering a long-term industrial and technological partnership between Ukraine and Bulgaria that could reshape regional defense manufacturing and supply chains.
