KYIV (Azat TV) – Ukrainian forces have successfully struck and damaged a Russian Bastion coastal missile system launcher, along with destroying two Zircon hypersonic missiles, in occupied Crimea early Tuesday. The Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) reported that the operation, which also targeted Russian command and troop concentration points in eastern Ukraine, thwarted planned attacks on civilian areas. The strikes highlight Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to degrade Russian military capabilities and disrupt its offensive operations.
Bastion Launcher and Zircon Missiles Destroyed
The operation, detailed by the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), involved tracking a column of Bastion-M launchers near the village of Furmanovka in occupied Crimea as they moved toward firing positions. According to a statement from the HUR, precise strikes by reconnaissance units resulted in the destruction of one launcher and two Zircon missiles, with another Bastion launcher sustaining damage. Drone footage, though its independent verification remains pending, appears to show the movement of the launchers before the strike and the impact itself. The attack reportedly resulted in the casualties of seven Russian servicemen.
Targeting Russian Command and Logistics
Beyond the strike on the Bastion system, Ukrainian forces also targeted Russian command posts and troop concentrations in occupied areas of Donetsk, Luhansk, and Zaporizhzhia regions. Specifically, a command post for unmanned aerial vehicles near Velyka Novosilka in Donetsk Oblast was struck, as was an area of concentrated Russian personnel near Khoroshe in Luhansk Oblast. Additionally, a repair unit in Novozlatopil, Zaporizhzhia region, was hit. These coordinated strikes are seen as part of a broader strategy to degrade Russia’s command, control, and logistical infrastructure across multiple fronts.
The Bastion System and Zircon Missiles
The Bastion coastal defense system, while primarily designed to engage surface ships, has been utilized by Russian forces to strike ground targets in Ukraine using P-800 Onyx missiles. These missiles are noted for their supersonic speed and ability to fly at extremely low altitudes, making them difficult to intercept. The Zircon hypersonic missile, officially entered into service in 2023, is capable of speeds up to Mach 8-9 and has a range of approximately 400 to 1,000 kilometers. The HUR stated that Russian forces have been employing Zircon missiles against civilian areas, underscoring the significance of thwarting these planned attacks.
Broader Ukrainian Offensive Operations
These strikes on Tuesday follow a pattern of intensified Ukrainian operations against Russian military assets. On the preceding Monday, Ukrainian forces reportedly targeted and destroyed multiple Russian air defense systems, radar installations, and logistics depots, including a Tor surface-to-air missile system in Donetsk and a Tunguska air defense system in Russia’s Bryansk region. The ongoing success of these operations suggests a strategic effort by Ukraine to disrupt Russian military operations and reduce its offensive capabilities across occupied territories and within Russia itself.
The destruction of the Bastion launcher and Zircon missiles, coupled with strikes on command and repair facilities, demonstrates Ukraine’s evolving capacity to strike key Russian military assets deep within occupied territories, thereby degrading Moscow’s offensive potential and bolstering its defensive posture.
