Uruguay’s Parliament Condemns Detention of Armenian POWs and Ethnic Cleansing

Uruguay’s House of Representatives has unanimously adopted a resolution calling on Azerbaijan to immediately release all Armenian prisoners of war held illegally. The initiative was spearheaded by Armenian-descended MP José Luis Sajnajian during a special parliamentary session commemorating the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

According to the Embassy of Armenia in Uruguay, representatives of all political parties supported the resolution and spoke in solidarity with the Armenian people, underlining Uruguay’s long-standing commitment to human rights. The lawmakers recalled that Uruguay was the first country to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide, a point of pride reaffirmed during the session.

Focus on Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenian Captives

In their remarks, MPs José Luis Sajnajian, Ana Olivera, and Pedro Jisdonian condemned the ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh and addressed the ongoing issue of Armenian POWs unlawfully held in Azerbaijan. The resolution emphasized the urgent need for their release and framed the situation as a violation of international humanitarian law.

Uruguayan legislators highlighted the moral and legal responsibility of the international community to address these violations and protect the rights of displaced and detained Armenians.

Members of parliament also expressed admiration for the Armenian community in Uruguay and their contributions to national life. The session was attended by Armenia’s Ambassador to Uruguay, Mariam Gevorgyan, whose efforts and diplomatic work were praised by legislators. The resolution is part of Uruguay’s consistent foreign policy of human rights advocacy and stands as a strong message to Azerbaijan and the broader international community.
