Historic Breakthrough for ZXMOTO in WorldSSP

Valentin Debise wrote his name into the record books on Saturday at the Pirelli Portuguese Round, delivering the first-ever FIM Supersport World Championship race victory for the Chinese manufacturer ZXMOTO. The Frenchman dominated the 17-lap contest at the Portimao circuit, crossing the finish line with a commanding 3.685-second lead over his closest challengers.

The race was defined by a major shift in momentum on the second lap when early leader Can Oncu suffered a lowside crash at Turn 14. With the path clear, Debise seized the opportunity to stretch his advantage, consistently clocking faster sectors while the pack behind him engaged in a fierce battle for the remaining podium spots.

Championship Stakes and Podium Battles

As the spring season intensifies, the points race remains razor-tight. Jaume Masia, riding for Orelac Racing Verdnatura, secured a crucial runner-up finish, effectively extending his lead in the overall championship standings to 51 points. Despite facing immense pressure from the Yamaha contingent, Masia held off Lucas Mahias to claim his second podium of the 2026 season.

Lucas Mahias, representing GMT94 Yamaha, took third place, marking his 35th career podium. The race also highlighted the competitive depth of the field, as Roberto Garcia and Albert Arenas rounded out the top five, with less than four-tenths of a second separating the riders from third to fifth place in a frantic final-lap scramble.

Tactical Challenges at the Rollercoaster Circuit

The Portimao circuit, known for its extreme elevation changes and technical demands, tested rider endurance throughout the 17-lap event. While Debise managed his pace at the front, other riders faced significant recovery challenges. Notably, Kawasaki’s Jeremy Alcoba fought his way to a 10th-place finish after starting from the back of the grid due to a penalty assessed during the Tissot Superpole session.

Philipp Oettl, currently third in the championship, logged a solid sixth-place finish. Although Oettl closed the gap to the leading group in the closing stages, he was unable to bridge the distance required to challenge for the podium. The results at Portimao signal a critical juncture in the season, with riders now looking toward the final day of the Portuguese round to solidify their standing before the next series of high-stakes matchups.

The strategic importance of this victory for ZXMOTO cannot be overstated, as it marks the brand’s emergence as a genuine technical contender in the WorldSSP category, shifting the competitive landscape just as the championship enters its high-intensity spring phase.
