Armenia Tightens Penalties for Vehicle Theft

Armenia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has proposed legislative amendments aimed at preventing vehicle thefts and increasing penalties for such crimes. The Ministry emphasized that the rise in vehicle theft is a growing issue both in Armenia and globally.

According to the Ministry’s statement, thefts from vehicles are currently not classified as serious crimes under existing regulations, limiting the legal system’s ability to adequately address the societal dangers of such acts. As a result, many offenders remain free and are able to repeat their crimes.

The new legislative initiative aims to tighten penalties for vehicle theft, aligning them with the actual societal harm and risks posed by such crimes. The Ministry believes that harsher penalties will have a strong deterrent effect and enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement activities.

Preventive measures also include increased patrolling in residential areas by the Patrol Service to curb thefts. The proposal was developed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in collaboration with MP Armen Khachatryan.

The public can review the draft legislation on the unified platform for publishing legal acts.

This initiative seeks not only to enhance crime prevention efforts but also to ensure greater security for citizens’ property.
