KOLKATA (Azat TV) – The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) has officially been designated as the State Level School Accreditation Authority (SSAA), a significant move announced this Monday that aims to elevate the quality and standards of secondary education across the state. This new mandate positions WBCHSE to systematically evaluate and categorize schools, mirroring the accreditation processes already in place for higher education institutions.
The announcement was made by Chiranjib Bhattacharya, President of WBCHSE, during a Republic Day programme held at Vidyasagar Bhavan in Salt Lake, Kolkata. The decision follows the approval of comprehensive accreditation guidelines, which Bhattacharya confirmed he helped frame as a member of the responsible committee. The School Education Department had previously issued an order on October 17, 2023, designating WBCHSE as the authority and initiating the process at the higher secondary level, also forming a five-member committee to develop the implementation framework.
New Mandate for School Quality
As the newly appointed State School Accreditation Authority, WBCHSE will oversee a structured accreditation process where schools will be evaluated and categorized based on their performance. This framework is designed to bring a new level of accountability and quality assurance to the state’s secondary education system, similar to how institutions like colleges, universities, and engineering institutions are accredited by national bodies. The move is expected to foster continuous improvement in educational delivery and infrastructure across West Bengal.

This initiative, part of the council’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, is specifically designed to prepare Class X students for the rigors of higher secondary education. The program focuses on newly introduced or upgraded subjects that are critical in today’s evolving technological landscape.
Key subjects covered by the Bootstrap Programme include Modern Computer Applications, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Applied Artificial Intelligence, and Cyber Security. Furthermore, the program will offer short guidance modules in foundational science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. This holistic approach aims to provide students with a solid academic foundation and expose them to cutting-edge fields, thereby making the transition to higher secondary education smoother and more engaging.
Strategic Vision for Science Education
President Bhattacharya also highlighted the council’s ongoing efforts to increase enrollment in science streams, a critical area for national development. He noted a significant improvement since he assumed the presidency in 2021, when the percentage of students opting for the science group stood at nine percent. Currently, that figure has risen to 14 percent, with an ambitious target of reaching at least 20 percent.
The emphasis on science education is intrinsically linked to the new accreditation standards and the Bootstrap Programme.
