The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has announced that fishing for whitefish is prohibited until January 20 due to the spawning period. During this time, police officers and other relevant authorities will carry out preventive measures to ensure compliance with the ban and reduce violations.

Two incidents of illegal fishing and transportation of whitefish were reported on December 6 and 8 as part of these preventive operations.

On December 6, eco-rangers from the Sevan National Park, in cooperation with Gegharkunik Province’s water patrol officers, discovered over 55 kilograms of whitefish in a fishing boat near the shore of Lake Sevan, close to the village of Jil. The boat’s owner, a 61-year-old resident of Noratus village, claimed he had purchased the fish from an unidentified individual. The fishing boat was taken to a secured area under the supervision of the Sevan community police department.

Another case occurred on December 8. Around 9 p.m., water patrol officers in Gegharkunik Province inspected a parked “UAZ” vehicle near the 67th kilometer of the Yerevan-Sevan-Ijevan highway and found two bags of fish weighing over 35 kilograms. The vehicle’s occupants, two residents of Sevan city aged 44 and 37, stated that they had purchased the fish earlier that day from an unknown person.

Documentation for both cases has been forwarded to the Sevan Investigative Department for further examination.
