The Baku Military Court continued the trial of Ruben Vardanyan and other Artsakh officials on February 6. Ruben Vardanyan’s case is being heard separately and will continue on February 10, while the trial of other Artsakh figures took place today.<\/p>\n
During the court sessions, according to Azerbaijani media, excerpts from the indictment were presented, and the $1 of Artsakh, Arayik Harutyunyan, and the former Foreign Minister, David Babayan, were given the opportunity to speak.<\/p>\n
A part of Ruben Vardanyan’s indictment was also presented. Siranush Sahakyan, a lawyer defending the interests of Armenian prisoners of war in the ECHR, told NEWS.am some details about Ruben Vardanyan’s trial, based on information from a local lawyer who informed Vardanyan’s family.<\/p>\n
“We have some alternative information from the hearing on Ruben Vardanyan’s case, which the family received through his lawyer, Abraham Berman. At the hearing, the defense presented two objections, one of which concerned the translator. In addition to the fact that the fabricated case contains 422 volumes in Azerbaijani, it turned out that the translator assigned to him, who was supposed to provide at least oral translation of the case materials (since written translation, even making notes are not allowed), did not even provide normal oral translation and made serious mistakes. Even in some places there were references not to the legislation of Azerbaijan, but of Belarus. According to the information I received, the court ordered that Ruben Vardanyan and his lawyer be provided with an adequate translation. And this is only during the third hearing, when the trial began to be considered on the merits. In addition, all the motions of the defense to receive copies of the case and to get acquainted with the content of the videos were rejected. Naturally, the Azerbaijani media do not report this,” said Siranush Sahakyan.<\/p>\n
Regarding the statements of Arayik Harutyunyan and David Babayan, Siranush Sahakyan noted that they are, of course, made under pressure, and these testimonies do not sound credible to any international expert. She also noted that it is clear from the published excerpts of the indictment that the general meaning of this trial is to achieve the inadmissibility of the principle of self-determination of Artsakh and to destroy all efforts at self-determination.
