According to NBC Sports, he leads the NFL with 6.0 sacks, eight tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles across three contests. The fourth-year linebacker’s production has anchored an undefeated start for Buffalo, putting him in rare historical company both across the league and within the franchise.

Historic Franchise and League Milestones

Rousseau’s explosive start places him among the most accomplished pass rushers in NFL history. According to league records cited by NBC Sports, he became only the third player since 1982—when the sack became an official statistic—to record at least 2.0 sacks in each of his team’s first three games of a season. He joins Mark Gastineau, who accomplished the feat in 1984, and Kevin Greene, who did so in 1998.

Within franchise history, Rousseau stands alongside legendary company. According to BuffaloBills.com, only Bruce Smith in 1990 and Bryce Paup in 1995 have previously recorded a streak of three straight games with two or more sacks for the Bills. Furthermore, Rousseau is the first Buffalo defender to claim the AFC Defensive Player of the Month award since safety Jordan Poyer earned the distinction in December 2017, as reported by Spectrum Local News.

Defensive Anchoring and Upcoming Schedule

The defensive star’s consistent backfield disruption has proven vital for Buffalo, particularly during tight contests. Following the Bills’ 24-16 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, head coach Joe Brady emphasized the defense’s role in securing the win despite an offensive performance that featured five turnovers.

“Offensively we didn’t have our fastball yesterday, but defensively we had our fastball, and I thought that was really (great) as we continue to learn about our team,” Brady told WKBW. Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard added that while the unit’s execution still requires refinement, their ability to make critical stops kept the team undefeated.

Rousseau enters October sitting just 2.0 sacks away from his single-season career high of 8.0 sacks, a mark he previously reached in 2022 and 2024. The Bills will look to maintain their momentum on Sunday when they host the New England Patriots.

Follow-up Questions

<details style="display:block;">

Can Greg Rousseau break his single-season career high of 8.0 sacks?

Rousseau has already accumulated 6.0 sacks through three games, needing just 2.0 more sacks to tie his previous career-high set in 2022 and 2024

</details>

<details style="display:block;">

Who do the Buffalo Bills play next?

The Bills are scheduled to host the New England Patriots on Sunday

What remains unclear: Exact game-time tactical adjustments and final injury reports leading into Sunday’s matchup have not been fully finalized

</details>

Perspectives

Coaching Staff View vs League Perspective

Story lens

Coaching Staff View

Buffalo’s coaching staff views Rousseau’s explosive start as a foundational anchor for a defense transitioning under coordinator Jim Leonhard.
