On June 21–22, 2025, the scenic Martz Valley in Armenia’s Lori Province hosted the third edition of the now-traditional mountain hiking championship “Arahet.” This year, 150 hikers gathered in 25 teams, supported by 70 volunteers and numerous guests, united by their love for Armenia’s nature and mountains.

Organized by the Bardzunk Educational Movement, “Arahet” is recognized as Armenia’s first and only national hiking championship. But it’s more than a competition—it is a spiritual journey toward self-discovery, homeland connection, and unity through Armenia’s majestic landscapes.

As Gayane Tunyan, a member of Bardzunk’s Leadership Council, explains: “Arahet is the path to the rebirth of the Armenian spirit. By restoring our deep bond with the mountains, we rediscover the awareness and strength of national belonging.”

Participation is structured as a team challenge—each team consists of six members who must reach the final point together. The journey requires not only physical readiness but also spiritual commitment. Arahet is a test of endurance, cooperation, and unity.

This year’s event introduced two routes for the first time: a professional 28 km path and an amateur 11 km route, spanning from Martz to Yeghnakhaghats and Dzharasar mountains. Each step of the hike became a collective challenge, while nights spent under the stars by campfire created lasting memories.

Beyond the main routes, teams also competed in special categories such as archery, map reading, and photography.

Project coordinator Mher Sanosyan highlighted: “This year was special—we turned the event into a two-day celebration. We welcomed many amateur teams, including youth discovering the mountains as a source of strength and unity. This is the true purpose of Arahet.”

The championship was enriched by a cultural program. Artists Vahag Rash and Lilit Pipoyan moved participants with their music. Mountaineer Gegham Ohanyan delivered a heartfelt speech, reminding everyone of their ancestral roots in this land. Traditional songs and dances from “Vare Varenq,” local artisans from “Khnkeni,” and active involvement by Martz residents completed the celebration.

As Ara from “Kharuyk” Hiking Club stated: “The key to our victory was team unity—and above all, the shared preparation and experience.”

In the end, Arahet 2025 proved to be more than just an event. It became a mountain festival—a condensed image of national values, teamwork, and inner strength.

The next peaks are already waiting. All that’s left is to prepare—and dare.
