In a move to deepen defense cooperation, the Armenian government has decided to appoint a defense attaché to the European Union and the Kingdom of Belgium.
The government made the decision to establish a defense attaché to the Republic of Armenia’s representation at the EU during its March 6 session. According to the decision, the current defense attaché to the Armenian Mission to NATO will be dually appointed and accredited as the defense attaché to both the EU and Belgium.
Expanding Armenia-EU Defense Cooperation: A New Phase
Armenia’s cooperation with the European Union, particularly in the defense sector, is entering a new phase of development. This governmental decision reflects Armenia’s commitment to deepening military and politico-military dialogue with the EU, which is crucial for strengthening national security.
European Peace Facility and Armenian Resilience: Key Areas of Cooperation
The rationale behind the decision highlights the support provided to Armenia under the European Peace Facility and the initiation of negotiations on a framework agreement for Armenia’s participation in EU crisis management missions. These factors are seen as significantly contributing to Armenia’s resilience. This underscores the practical aspect of EU cooperation and its tangible benefits for Armenia.
Military Cooperation with Belgium: Long-Term Prospects
The military cooperation initiated with Belgium is also emphasized for its long-term potential to positively impact the development of Armenia’s defense capabilities and resilience. Belgium, as a member state of both the EU and NATO, can play a key role in strengthening Armenia’s defense capabilities by sharing expertise and technologies.
NATO Experience and Compatibility Principle: Strengthening Ties
It is noted that a defense attaché already operates within the Armenian Mission to NATO. The new decision envisions the NATO defense attaché concurrently serving as the defense attaché to the EU and Belgium. This approach promotes efficient management and optimal use of resources, while also allowing for more systematic work with various European institutions.
Advantages and Opportunities: The Role of the New Attaché
The adoption of this project will enable the Armenian Ministry of Defense to work effectively with the European Union through a dedicated defense attaché, facilitating further strengthening of institutional ties and expanding opportunities for military and politico-military cooperation. The appointment of a new attaché will enhance Armenia’s involvement in European defense initiatives and contribute to the advancement of mutual interests.
Armenia’s appointment of a defense attaché to the EU and Belgium is a significant step towards deepening defense cooperation with European partners. It contributes to strengthening Armenia’s resilience and active engagement in European security structures.
