The Office of the Representative on International Legal Matters announced that Armenia will submit new evidence and demands to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) concerning the trials of Armenian prisoners of war (POWs) and civilians in Azerbaijan.
This initiative follows the ongoing trials in Azerbaijan, which began on January 17, 2025, and will continue next week. The trials involve Armenian POWs and civilians, accused by Azerbaijani authorities, in cases widely criticized as lacking fairness and due process.
The office recalled that in 2022 and 2024, Armenia filed two interstate complaints with the ECHR aimed at safeguarding the rights of Armenian POWs and civilians in Azerbaijan. These complaints addressed their right to a fair trial, freedom, and personal security.
The statement confirmed that the ECHR will receive additional evidence and demands within the established procedures and deadlines. The office continues to monitor the ongoing trials in Azerbaijan, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring the protection of fundamental human rights.
The trials, labeled by many as a judicial farce, have been a focal point of international concern.
