As Bluesky continues to grow in popularity, attracting celebrities and influencers, the platform is tackling a significant challenge: impersonation and verified identity. In response, Bluesky has updated its policies to address these issues head-on.
The Bluesky Safety team announced on Friday that it is implementing a stricter impersonation policy. Accounts engaging in impersonation or handle-squatting will now be removed. This decisive action follows the expansion of Bluesky’s moderation team, which has quadrupled in size to handle the growing influx of user reports. However, the team acknowledged that a backlog of moderation reports still exists due to the platform’s rapid user growth.
One of the hurdles contributing to confusion is Bluesky’s current lack of a verified user badge, a feature many users were accustomed to on platforms like Twitter (now X). Instead, Bluesky relies on signals such as verified domains in user handles. For example, official Bluesky-affiliated accounts include the domain “bsky.team” in their handles, signaling their authenticity.
To address these gaps, Bluesky has started collaborating with organizations and high-profile individuals to set up verified domain handles. CEO Jay Graber also hinted that Bluesky might enable other apps or organizations to conduct their own verification processes in the future.
Bluesky allows parody and fan accounts, but they must clearly label themselves in both their display name and bio. Additionally, the platform prohibits “identity churning,” where accounts switch identities after gaining followers. Any account found violating these rules will face removal.
Bluesky acknowledges the feedback from its users, who are calling for more robust verification tools beyond domain-based methods. The platform is exploring new ways to enhance account verification and plans to share updates soon. This commitment to user feedback reflects Bluesky’s broader strategy to build trust and safety on the platform.
As Bluesky grows into a major social media player, ensuring user authenticity is critical for its credibility and success. The updated impersonation policy and ongoing efforts to develop advanced verification methods highlight the platform’s proactive approach to maintaining a safe and trustworthy online environment.
