The 2026 Stanley Cup Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Carolina Hurricanes has become a focal point for intense fan activism. During recent games, including Saturday’s double-overtime thriller, Vegas goaltender Carter Hart has been the target of persistent chants of “no means no” from spectators.
Hart’s presence on the ice remains highly controversial. In July 2025, Hart and four other members of Canada’s 2018 World Juniors team were acquitted of sexual assault charges by the Ontario Superior Court. Despite the acquittal, the NHL suspended all five players, stating their conduct fell “woefully short” of the league’s standards and values.
The Intersection of Athletics and Accountability
The chanting represents a significant shift in professional sports, where fan bases are increasingly utilizing the arena as a platform to voice ethical grievances. Unlike standard jeering, the “no means no” chants directly address the nature of the allegations that previously sidelined Hart and his former teammates.
While Hart continues to perform at an elite level—maintaining a .913 save percentage through 19 playoff games—the off-ice narrative continues to follow him. During post-game media availability earlier in the series, Hart attempted to address his personal growth, stating, “I’ve learned a lot. I’ve grown a lot since then.” However, the Golden Knights’ communications team ended the session prematurely, cutting off further inquiry.
The league now faces a complex challenge: balancing the competitive integrity of the Stanley Cup Final with the escalating friction between players and fans. With the series currently favoring Vegas 2-1, the tension is expected to persist as the teams head back to Nevada for Game 4.
