Cold Front Brings Snowfall and Weather Warnings Across South Africa

A powerful cold front is sweeping across South Africa, bringing icy temperatures, snowfall, and severe weather warnings to multiple regions. According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), the western and central parts of the country have been most affected, with a mix of rain, snow, and graupel expected in the coming days. These conditions are being driven by a strong cut-off low that formed over the western part of the country and is slowly moving eastwards.

Johannesburg, Gauteng, however, is unlikely to see snow this time, despite the freezing temperatures. The last recorded snowfall in Johannesburg occurred on July 10, 2023. Residents in Gauteng are instead experiencing cloudy to partly cloudy weather, with clearing skies expected later in the week.

In addition to the snow, SAWS has issued multiple weather warnings for the affected areas. A yellow level 1 warning has been declared for severe thunderstorms accompanied by large amounts of small hail in the Free State and eastern parts of the Northern Cape. Coastal regions, particularly between Alexander Bay and Plettenberg Bay, are facing disruptions due to damaging waves.
