MADRID (Azat TV) – Former Spanish international footballer David Villa is returning to Atlético de Madrid in a new capacity, joining the club’s Board of Directors. The appointment comes twelve years after his departure from the club as a player, where he made a significant impact, including winning La Liga in the 2013/14 season.

Villa’s New Role and Club Ambitions

David Villa expressed his enthusiasm for his new responsibilities, stating, “I’m very happy to be returning to the club with new responsibilities, but with the same desire to continue helping Atlético de Madrid grow season after season.” He added, “The club has experienced significant growth for several years, and I hope to contribute to our continued success. I’m very grateful that they considered me for this role.” The club’s president, Enrique Cerezo, welcomed Villa back, remarking, “This has always been his home. We are very pleased that he has accepted this challenge and I am convinced that with his vast experience, he will help make Atlético de Madrid even stronger.”

New Ownership and Strategic Expansion

Villa’s appointment coincides with a significant restructuring under new majority shareholders, Apollo Sports Capital, an American investment firm that acquired 57% of the club last year. The Board of Directors has been expanded from five to eleven members. While Enrique Cerezo and Miguel Ángel Gil will continue as Chairman and CEO, respectively, Villa is among six new additions. This reshuffling of leadership is accompanied by a capital increase of up to €100 million. These funds are earmarked for a major urban development project named the “City of Sport,” planned adjacent to the Riyadh Air Metropolitan Stadium. This ambitious project is set to include extensive sports facilities, a shopping mall, and a large artificial beach featuring one of Europe’s largest wave pools.

Villa’s Impact as a Player

During his single season with Atlético de Madrid in 2013/14, Villa was instrumental in their La Liga triumph. He played in 47 matches, scoring 15 goals and providing four assists. Beyond his time at Atlético, Villa enjoyed a decorated career, winning major titles with Real Zaragoza, Valencia, and Barcelona. He also holds the record as the Spanish national team’s all-time leading goalscorer, with 59 goals in 98 appearances between 2005 and 2017. His return to the club signifies a blend of past achievements and future aspirations under a new ownership structure.

Villa’s return to Atlético Madrid’s board, under new American ownership, highlights a trend of former star players being integrated into club management to leverage their experience and fan appeal, particularly as the club embarks on significant expansion projects.
