London (Azat TV) – Prime Video is set to launch its highly anticipated origin story, ‘Young Sherlock,’ on March 4, 2026. The eight-episode series, starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes, delves into the iconic detective’s formative years at Oxford University, where a campus murder quickly escalates into a complex, globe-spanning conspiracy.

Helmed by acclaimed writer and executive producer Guy Ritchie, known for his dynamic cinematic style, and with Matthew Parkhill serving as showrunner, ‘Young Sherlock’ promises an action-packed take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary character. The series is based on Andy Lane’s popular book series, offering fans a fresh perspective on Holmes before he became the fully-fledged detective audiences recognize.

Unraveling Sherlock’s Early Mysteries and Global Conspiracy

The narrative of ‘Young Sherlock’ begins with Holmes as a novice investigator at Oxford, whose inherent curiosity and intelligence are tested when he stumbles upon a murder. This initial crime pulls him into a vast international web of intrigue, forcing him to hone the observational and deductive skills that will later define him. Hero Fiennes Tiffin, known for his roles in the ‘After’ movies and as young Voldemort in ‘Harry Potter,’ takes on the challenge of portraying a Sherlock who is still learning the ropes.

Tiffin expressed to Teen Vogue his excitement about exploring a Sherlock who isn’t yet a master detective. ‘We’ve tried to make the most of the fact that he’s not a fully-fledged Sherlock,’ he stated, adding that the character in this first season ‘has so much to learn.’ This adaptation aims to show how circumstances lead him to embrace his unique talents for investigation, rather than starting with a predetermined career path.

The Cast Bringing Young Holmes’s World to Life

The series boasts a stellar cast bringing both familiar and new characters to the Sherlock Holmes universe. Dónal Finn steps into the role of James Moriarty, depicted here not as an arch-nemesis but as an initial friend and confidant. Finn told Teen Vogue that this reimagining, where they meet as peers and bond quickly, is ‘the most compelling’ aspect, as they both feel isolated until they find someone operating on their level.

Other key cast members include Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou’an, a kung fu master whose kidnapping sets parts of the plot in motion; Max Irons as Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s elder brother who offers a steady presence; and Natascha McElhone and Joseph Fiennes as Sherlock’s parents, Cordelia and Silas Holmes. Notably, Joseph Fiennes is Hero Fiennes Tiffin’s real-life uncle, a dynamic that Tiffin believes brought a natural familiarity to their on-screen relationship. Veteran actor Colin Firth also joins the ensemble as Sir Bucephalus Hodge, a dean at Oxford whose hosting of Princess Gulun Shou’an is pivotal to the unfolding mystery. Holly Cattle plays Edie, described as an intelligent and manipulative character, while Ravi Aujla appears as Professor Kishore Malik, an Oxford professor.

From Historic Bristol to Spanish Plazas: Filming Locations

The production of ‘Young Sherlock’ embraced a variety of atmospheric locations across the UK and Spain to create its 19th-century setting. In England, filming took place in central Bristol, with areas like Broad Street and Underfall Yard transformed to double as Victorian Oxford streets, as revealed by supervising location manager Deon Du Preez to Elle UK. Authentic Oxford scenes were also captured on Merton Street, reflecting Sherlock’s university years.

London’s historic architecture, including the Queen Elizabeth Hall, provided backdrops for the capital. South Wales served as a significant production hub, with sets constructed at Great Point Studios in Cardiff. Merthyr Mawr Country Estate stood in for the Holmes family home, Appleton Manor, while the dramatic landscapes of the Brecon Beacons were ingeniously used to create a Chinese Village for flashback scenes, according to Production Designer Tom Burton. Additionally, Somerset’s Shepton Mallet Prison was utilized for scenes set in London’s Newgate Prison, as confirmed by Somerset Council.

Beyond the UK, the production ventured to Spain, with filming in Jerez, Cádiz, and Seville. Key locations in Cádiz, such as Plaza de Argüelles and Plaza de Candelaria, were meticulously dressed with period details. These Spanish locales were strategically chosen to double for other international settings, including Constantinople, Turkish landscapes, and Paris, for later episodes of the global adventure.

A New Look at the Iconic Detective’s Origins

This Prime Video adaptation arrives amidst a long legacy of Sherlock Holmes interpretations, from the BBC’s ‘Sherlock’ to Guy Ritchie’s own ‘Sherlock Holmes’ films starring Robert Downey Jr., and ‘Enola Holmes.’ ‘Young Sherlock’ distinguishes itself by focusing on the detective’s youth, family dynamics, and the very beginnings of his investigative journey. By introducing his parents—characters largely absent from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original works—and depicting an early, complex friendship with Moriarty, the series offers a deeper, more personal exploration of the man behind the legend.

The decision to trace Sherlock Holmes’s development from a curious, intelligent young man to the renowned detective, rather than presenting him as a fully formed genius, provides a compelling narrative hook. This approach allows the series to explore the influences and pivotal events that shaped his character and methods, offering a fresh, character-driven dimension to a universally beloved figure.
