Performance Benchmarks in Edinburgh

As the 2026 Commonwealth Games approach, elite swimmers have converged on the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh for the Scottish National Open Swimming Championships. The three-day event, concluding June 28, has served as a high-stakes proving ground for national record holders aiming to calibrate their form against international benchmarks.

Angharad Evans, a standout from the University of Stirling, reinforced her status as a global leader in breaststroke. Following her victory in the 100m breast on day one, Evans secured a win in the 200m event with a time of 2:23.27. Evans, who became the first woman from her nation to break the 2:20 barrier earlier this year, currently holds the world’s top ranking in the 200m breaststroke.

Olympic Relay Veterans Face Off

The men’s 200m freestyle provided one of the meet’s most competitive displays, featuring a field of Olympic champion relay teammates. James Guy, 30, claimed victory with a time of 1:47.15, narrowly edging out Matt Richards (1:47.64) and Duncan Scott (1:47.71). Tom Dean followed in fourth place with 1:48.48.

In the men’s 100m backstroke, Manchester Performance Centre’s Ollie Morgan dominated the field, touching the wall in 53.36. His performance comes as he maintains a top-three world ranking, building on the momentum from his British national record established last year.

These results offer a critical snapshot of athlete readiness as the international swimming calendar intensifies. With the Commonwealth Games and European Championships looming later this year, the Scottish National Open has provided the necessary competitive pressure for athletes to secure their positions and refine their tactical approaches.
