A New Chapter in Eisenberg’s Directorial Career

A24 has officially unveiled the first trailer for The Debut, the third directorial project from actor and filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg. Following the significant critical success of his 2024 film A Real Pain—which earned an Oscar nomination and brought home a Best Supporting Actor win for Kieran Culkin—Eisenberg shifts his focus to the high-stakes, eccentric world of community theater.

Plot and Cast Dynamics

The film stars Julianne Moore as Mona, a shy and unassuming woman who finds her life unexpectedly transformed after being cast in a local community theater production. The narrative centers on her intense relationship with the production’s director, Jerry, portrayed by Paul Giamatti. Described by the production as a “brilliant but difficult” figure, Jerry pushes Mona to the edge as she attempts to navigate the pressures of the stage.

The ensemble cast also features Halle Bailey, Bernadette Peters, Cara Buono, Craig Bierko, and Eldar Isgandarov, alongside Eisenberg himself. The project serves as a reunion for Eisenberg and Moore, who previously collaborated on the 2022 film When You Finish Saving the World.

Creative Origins

Eisenberg, who wrote and directed the film, has noted that The Debut incorporates original music he penned years ago. The production is backed by Fruit Tree, the production company founded by Emma Stone, Dave McCary, and Ali Herting, in association with A24 and Topic Studios. While an official release date has not yet been set, the film is expected to hit theaters later in 2026, with festival appearances likely in the coming months.
